James is a vain red engine with the number five.

James is a very boastful engine who likes to get his way. He also enjoys showing off, and likes to pull the express whenever he gets the chance. He mostly does mixed-traffic duties on the mainline.

James originally pulled Annie and Clarabel. However, when he broke down on top of Henry's Tunnel, his coaches were given to Thomas and he was given mixed-traffic jobs after he was saved by Harvey.

He later caused an accident where S.C. Ruffey broke away from his train and crashed at the bottom of Gordon's Hill. After the accident was cleaned up, he was exiled to Tidmouth Sheds for a week, and was teased by Gordon and Henry. His punishment was later changed to shunting in the yard for talking back to Sir Topham Hatt.

James nowadays works on the Main Line, doing mixed-traffic duties. He is good friends with Gordon and Henry. He also gets along well with Arthur. However, he cannot stand Arry, Bert, Den, and Dart.

James is vain, boastful, and snooty. He also can be a bit of a smart-aleck. He is very proud of his splendid red paint job, and hates pulling trucks, because he thinks it will spoil his paint work. He thinks himself superior to the others, and can be shallow and vain, particularly to those who appear old-fashioned, weak, slow, or dirty. He also holds a grudge against diesel engines, particularly Arry and Bert. However, he has learned to respect BoCo and Derek. He maintains a rivalry with Henry and Gordon as to who is the stronger of the three.
